HLF & Clore Leadership Programme supporting heritage leaders, closes from 13 Feb
The Clore Leadership Programme (CLP) and the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) have announced a three-year partnership to foster future leaders in the heritage sector through a package of Clore training and development opportunities, with applications for the 2017/2018 Clore Fellowship Programme closing on Monday 13 February 2017.

Scotland’s £6.6 million for heritage works and facilities follow report citing £65 million need for repairs

IHBC update: Conservation Areas 50th anniversary Parliamentary Debate – IHBC reports on England’s 35.8% collapse in conservation services and offers ‘5-point plan’ for survival
The IHBC has warmly welcomed the Parliamentary Debate on the 50th anniversary of Conservation Areas, supported by Robert Jenrick MP, scheduled for 26 January and inspired by Civic Voice’s ‘Big Conservation Conversation’, with the IHBC submitting data on the decade-long, 35%+ decline in England’s conservation services as well as its own ‘5-point plan’ for their survival.

IHBC announces first award to Wales from our Conservation Area 50th Anniversary fund
The IHBC has welcomed the first successful application from a civic group in Wales for an award from the IHBC’s Conservation Area 50th Anniversary fund, as Cymdeithas Aberaeron Society secures help on a planned RTPI Cymru talk exploring the factors that influenced Aberaeron’s recent success in their ‘Wales Best Places’ awards, which celebrate ‘places protected, carefully planned or improved by the planning system.’

IHBC’s CPD Boost: Holocaust Memorial Day – 27 Jan – and Context 108 on ‘Landscapes of human exploitation’
27 January 2017 is Holocaust Memorial Day and has a theme of ‘How can life go on?’, while Fiona Newton in her Context 108 article reports that 60% of people in the UK under the age of 35 had never heard of Auschwitz and asks how do we conserve the 20th century’s most dreadful heritage?

IHBC’s ‘Sign of the times’: 71% of councillors think the planning system favours developers
A survey of over 1,200 ward councillors in England, carried out by the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) reveals that councillors think the planning system works in the interests of developers over councils and local communities.

£20,000 bursary for UCL MSc Sustainable Heritage open for applications
The Ecclesiastical Insurance Bursary for the UCL MSc Sustainable Heritage provides up to £20,000 to cover the cost of fees and a stipend to a successful applicant, and closes 17 April 2017.

Update on controversial 1.8 mile tunnel under Stonehenge
After 30 years of discussions, the new plans are supported by UNESCO and Highways England but many say the tunnel will cause major damage to the landscape and should be longer.

IHBC member invitation to ‘Arches’: Conservation-focussed HE information workshop, CPD recognised – 29/30 March, Liverpool (Some places still available)
The City of Lincoln has joined in an international partnership to develop a new heritage database system for use by UK heritage management organisations, ‘Arches’, and is seeking input from conservation colleagues to secure suitable historic environment conservation standards by inviting IHBC members to a forthcoming IHBC CPD-recognised workshop in Liverpool on 29/30 March 2017.

The IHBC’s commercial conservation services listing, HESPR – the Historic Environment Service Providers Recognition scheme – offers members weekly HESPR Bulletins that bring tender opportunities together into one handy resource, and the Director’s top pick for IHBC members this week features a call from the University of London on the restoration of its Grade II listed Theatre building, Goldsmiths College’s former chapel, with a closing date of 26 January, contract valued at £1.45M.

Early Career Bursaries on IHBC-recognised ‘Traditional Roofs’ at Lincoln Castle: 8/9 February
The University of Leicester has announced a limited number of £90 bursary places for students, unwaged and early career (first five years post-graduation) professionals on one of its forthcoming IHBC-accredited CPD courses: Understanding and Inspecting Traditional Slate and Tile Roofs, at the Heritage Skills Centre, Lincoln Castle, on Wednesday 8 – Thursday 9 February.
For all other delegates the course costs £120 (early bird price – there are a couple of places left) to £185 so this represents a significant saving.

IHBC’s ‘Sign of the times’ from Parliament’s home: No historic building grants under Countryside Stewardship scheme for 2016…
The Heritage Alliance (THA) has noted that, in response to a question from Mark Hendrick MP, it has been revealed that although grants for the restoration of historic buildings (HE2) form part of the new Countryside Stewardship scheme, none were issued in 2016.

CIOB launches free ethical construction MOOC: 30 January
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Academy has launched a massive open online course (MOOC) focusing on ethics and compliance for construction professionals, starting 30 January 2017, the MOOC being an internet-based course that is available to a very large number of people for free.
