Sunderland achieves Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) status from Historic England
The city’s historic Fawcett Street and Old Sunderland is one of only 10 in the country to secure special status from Historic England, which aims to unlock the potential of historic areas to help them achieve economic growth.

Developers fined for removing historic fixtures from every room of Lincoln home
A property development company has been ordered to pay more than £55,000 after ignoring heritage planners and removing historic fabric and fixtures from a listed building without consent, according to the Lincolnite.

IHBC Gus Astley Student Award 2017 open for submissions: Showcase your course work by 31 July – winners at Belfast School in 2018
The IHBC’s 2017 Gus Astley Student Award is open for entries, so if you have presented coursework on a taught course that you think merits wider recognition by us, be sure to submit it by 31 July, while awardees wil have a chance to receive their prizes at the IHBC’s Annual School in Belfast in June 2018.

IHBC and international debate: Can Wellington (NZ) save its heritage buildings before it’s too late?
There’s an intense local debate between those who favour knocking down some of Wellington’s historic but unsafe buildings and those who believe that at least some of them can be preserved, according to the Dominion Post in New Zealand, as evidenced by the readers’ comments on the piece.

RICS Awards 2017 deadline extended to 27 January
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has extended the awards entry deadline for projects in eight categories, including Building Conservation, that showcase inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the built environment.

Scotland’s Conservation Crisis No 2: HES – 53% sites at risk
More than half of heritage sites and monuments managed by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) are at risk, according to a recent report, as analysis of 352 historic sites and monuments found 89 per cent were exposed to ‘damaging’ environmental effects, though mitigation calculations can reduce the count to 53%.

The Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) will carry out a review of a range of aspects of VAT in order to consider whether the VAT system is ‘working appropriately in today’s economy and to identify simplification opportunities’, with an update on its work and call for evidence to appear in the spring of 2017.
