Two Scottish WWII heritage sites win HLF funding
A boat that saved the lives of 600 stranded Allied troops at Dunkirk and a former prisoner of war camp will receive more than £1m for restoration work from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the BBC reports.

The IHBC has welcomed the launch of a new training academy by Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), which is aimed at enhancing excellence and boosting productivity, noting especially that it includes a conservation remit.

IHBC update: New voluntary Chair sought for Canal & River Trust’s Heritage Advisory Group, to succeed Sir Neil Cossons
The IHBC has been advised that Sir Neil Cossons, the present Chair of the Heritage Advisory Group of the Canal & River Trust, will be retiring this year and that the Trust is now looking for a new voluntary Chair to lead the group.

£480 million from private sources donated to England’s arts and culture
Arts Council England reports that private investment in arts and culture has grown over the last three years and appears to be becoming less reliant on public funding.

The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) has issued its 2015-16 annual report and highlights progress on its projects and its reform programme, which aims to reduce costs and strengthen its governance.

DCMS: Sharing lessons from innovative cultural projects
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS) report Countries of Culture: Funding and support for the arts outside London says that cultural projects support other policy areas and that best practice should be shared between local authorities.

IHBC challenges low fine of £20k in un-supported and illegal GII demolition – makes ‘demolition a viable development option!’
A man who ‘off his own bat’ demolished his Grade II listed cottage – Nutter Cote Farm in Yorkshire – has been fined £17,500 (with some £3000 in costs), a fine so low that the IHBC considers it could make such heritage demolition ‘a viable development option’ despite its criminality.

The IHBC’s commercial conservation services listing, HESPR – the Historic Environment Service Providers Recognition scheme – offers members weekly HESPR Bulletins that bring tender opportunities together into one handy resource, and the Director’s top pick for IHBC members this week features a call from Clare Castle Country Park for bids relating to an extensive programme of conservation work… required to preserve and bring to life the Park’s heritage assets, with a closing date for bids of 31 January, and valued at £20,000 – £60,000.

Scotland’s conservation challenge No.1: 68% of Scotland’s traditionally built homes have disrepair to critical elements
The Scottish Government has issued its Scottish House Condition Survey 2015 that also found that 52% of Scotland’s homes have disrepair to critical elements and 44% of all dwellings failed to meet the Scottish Housing Quality Standard (SHQS).

Construction output increases at fastest pace since March 16
Figures from Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index also show that new order growth reached an 11-month high in December, there has been a robust and accelerated upturn in new work but input cost inflation was at the highest level since April 2011.

CIOB promotes gender diversity with invitation to explore barriers at free networking in London: 31 January

Professional Fellowships and fully- funded PhD studentships in heritage: Deadlines in Jan & Feb
Professional Fellowships are on offer at the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) in Los Angeles, to train emerging conservation professionals, with closing date of 31 January 2017, while the university Heritage Consortium (Bradford, Hull, Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett, Northumbria, Sheffield Hallam and Teesside universities) invites high-quality proposals for up to 14 PhD studentships tenable for three years from 1 October 2017, with a deadline of 5pm Monday 6th February 2017.
