In their article titled Protecting memory through national designation, Cummins and McCrone discuss a statue of the Duke of Wellington (with traffic code on its head), a fibreglass statue of Dolores Ibarruri (the Spanish civil war heroine) and Bruce’s Stone (a large single piece of Loch Doon granite) – and asks ‘What are we really doing when we designate a work of art in a public place?’
