The IHBC has welcomed the launch by the British Standards Institute (BSI) of a new portal providing improved accessibility and functionality in the development of sector standards.
IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘The new portal offers a more accessible route than previously for skilled practitioners – including especially the IHBC’s accredited members – to shape the standards to which construction professionals and colleagues should work.’
‘This is particularly welcome as the IHBC’s conservation professionals come from a diverse range of disciplines. Facilitating and diversifying access to the creation of standards will be a huge step forward for all of our members’ varied interests’.
‘It also adds weight to the IHBC’s decision to promote BS 7913 – the Guide to the conservation of historic buildings – as a key standard for our members, both as historic and built environment conservation specialists. Offering it at a reduced rate has substantially raised its profile and extended access to this critical tool for any conservation specialist.’
The new portal replaces the Draft Review website and allows suggestions for new standards as well as viewing and commenting on proposed and draft standards being developed by the BSI.
Other enhancements allow users to:
- discover and track standards in development
- browse published standards
- find out which stakeholders are represented on BSI committees and discover which standards they are working on.
BSI is aiming to increase the understanding and visibility of the standards development lifecycle while making it easier for users to engage with the development process and improve the quality and relevance of the standards.
The Draft Review website will continue to exist until all live drafts published on there have expired. BSI will not migrate users’ information available under the ‘My profile’ and ‘My comments’ sections of the Draft Review website to the new portal. Users will have the opportunity to download their comments from the Draft Review website until its closure in 2017.
