Update on controversial 1.8 mile tunnel under Stonehenge

After 30 years of discussions, the new plans are supported by UNESCO and Highways England but many say the tunnel will cause major damage to the landscape and should be longer.

The Government has published its proposed solution to build a 1.8 mile tunnel under the World Heritage Site, a bypass for nearby Winterbourne Stoke and improve the existing junctions between the A303 and the intersecting A345 and A360. It is consulting on the proposals until 5 March 2017.

The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) is among those that say that it was important to consider all available evidence in detail and await the outcome of the advisory mission from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) which is due to visit the site at the end of January. It said further detailed information is needed to appreciate the full archaeological implications of the proposals and urged open publication of recent archaeological evaluation work along the proposed new route of the A303 within the consultation period.
