27 January 2017 is Holocaust Memorial Day and has a theme of ‘How can life go on?’, while Fiona Newton in her Context 108 article reports that 60% of people in the UK under the age of 35 had never heard of Auschwitz and asks how do we conserve the 20th century’s most dreadful heritage?
In her article titled Landscapes of human exploitation, Newton asks if we are we consistent in our celebration, commemoration or protection of uncomfortable aspects of history? She discussed the current state of infamous sites from history – from Deutsche Emalwarenfabrik Oscar Schindler and the Krakow ghetto, to the Plaszów forced labour camp and Auschwitz-Birkenau.
