IHBC NW Branch sorts foundations for 2017 Annual School: Training substructure to ‘Transport Infrastructure’
The IHBC’s North West Branch, which will host the 2017 Annual School in Manchester in June, has some major events planned over the next few months as part of its build up to the theme for the School: ‘Transport Infrastructure, the backbone of civilisation’.

IHBC’s ‘Top HESPR pick’ of the week: National Trust international design competition for Clandon Park, launching 9 March
The IHBC’s commercial conservation services listing, HESPR – the Historic Environment Service Providers Recognition scheme – offers members weekly HESPR Bulletins that bring tender and other opportunities together into one handy resource, and the IHBC Director’s top pick this week features a more unusual opportunity that should be of interest to many IHBC members: early notice of the National Trust’s plan for an international design completion for Leoni’s Clandon Park, launching on 9 March.

Heritage Protection Reform Proposals: Consultation responses summary from Historic England online
The Historic Environment Forum (HEF), the heritage key-stakeholder group, through its membership working group, the Historic Environment Protection Reform Group, consulted key heritage stakeholders on 15 proposed reforms in 2016, and the summary report from Historic England is now available online.

Salford Grade II Listed Church, recently restored, burnt down: Criminal investigation under way
There has been a severe fire at Grade II listed Church of the Ascension in Salford which police believe may have been started deliberately as the church, in Lower Broughton, which had recently undergone a £250,000 restoration, was almost completely destroyed on Sunday night.

Historic England officially objects to Neville and Giggs’ ‘aggressive’ Manchester Towers
Historic England has said it is ‘deeply concerned’ about proposals to build a pair of bronze-clad skyscrapers in central Manchester and will officially object to the Make-designed scheme, according to press reports.

Industrial Strategy Green Paper consultation and the heritage sector – closes 17 April
The Building Our Industrial Strategy Green Paper, published by Government in January, includes the heritage sector as part of the creative industries, one of five specific sector deals announced in a consultation closing on 17 April.

£4M grants for English Museums and Galleries improvements under DCMS/Wolfson Galleries and Museums Fund
Matt Hancock Minister of State for Digital and Culture, announced on 17 January last that grants totalling £4 million were awarded to improve displays and facilities at museums and galleries across England.

Cultural Property (Armed Conflicts) Bill next at its report stage and third reading on Monday 20 February 2017
The Bill would introduce the necessary legislation to enable the UK to ratify the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and accede to its two Protocols.

Defra handbooks on project grants, focussed on jobs and growth, with heritage opportunities
A number of handbooks have been published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) offering guidance on grant funding for projects in England, and focus on jobs and growth in the rural economy while also offering heritage opportunities.

Parochial house attached to ‘one of the most picturesque cathedrals’ in NI set to be listed
According to a report on 16 January in the Belfast Telegraph, the building at St Peter’s Cathedral in west Belfast has been recommended by the Department of Communities for B1 listing, just one category below the top tier A, which is reserved for some of the most special constructions in the country.

IHBC members’ opportunity: HE’s ‘Heritage Works’ update – new regen examples sought by 20 Feb
IHBC members are being asked to help organisations that include Historic England and the British Property Federation (BPF) to update the ‘Heritage Works: The Use of Historic Buildings in Regeneration…’ guide from 2013, with examples of good and best practice sought, to be sent first to IHBC Support Officer Carla Pianese at support@ihbc.org.uk.
