Why this matters:
Right now, there is no clear national picture of who makes up this workforce, what skills are in demand or where the gaps are. That gap makes it harder to secure the right training, funding and equipment for the sector. This survey is the chance to fix that, but only if enough people take part. The more responses we get, the stronger and more representative the evidence will be, and the more influence it can have on future investment and workforce planning.
We want to hear from:
- Individuals engaged in heritage and/or conservation science activity
- Employers of heritage science professionals
- Commissioners of heritage and conservation science services

Heritage science plays a vital role in understanding, preserving, and helping people enjoy the UK’s heritage. It spans work on individual objects, landscapes and sites, buildings and engineering bringing together people from scientific, technical and humanities backgrounds who work across academia, heritage organisations, commercial organisations, and research institutes.
This research aims to build a clearer picture of the distribution of this workforce, informing future workforce planning, training provision, investment and connections to equipment.
The project is led by Icon (the Institute of Conservation), in partnership with the National Heritage Science Forum and Preservation Matters.
