Parliament investigates report of falling masonry
Part of the Parliamentary estate was cordoned off on Thursday after reports that masonry had fallen from part of a building, smashing a car window.

IHBC welcomes new SPAB insights in the ‘SPAB Approach’: Critical practice perspectives for modern decision-making
The IHBC has welcomed the new statement on the practice standards and philosophy of the SPAB – The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings – recently published under the title ‘The SPAB approach to the care and conservation of old building’, and written by the SPAB Director and Full IHBC member Matthew Slocombe.

HE launches ‘Another England’: supporting ‘the stories of people of colour in England’
Historic England (HE) is looking for people, groups and organisations to get involved in its ‘Another England’ project – to better understand the stories of people of colour in England – and tell HE about the places and histories that should be included and help find appropriate ways to acknowledge the important stories that come to light.

Vic Soc: Campaign to save Conan Doyle’s last building from demolition
The Victorian Society (Vic Soc) reports on how the only surviving building designed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle could be demolished for new residential units if a planning application gets consent.

IHBC extends private sector support for applicants: Free IHBC CPD ‘MATE’s update, for a CgMS audience
The IHBC’s popular and free MATE seminars – our Membership Application Training Events, which support CPD-linked applications for IHBC accreditation – have taken a huge leap forward as planning consultancy CgMS hosted the first of a new IHBC seminar series that for private sector companies – including IHBC’s HESPR members – while CgMs welcomed the pilot as ‘… an excellent, bespoke seminar that wholly clarified the process of application for CgMS consultants.’

IHBC welcomes new research on LPA Urban Design services: Confirms England’s housing delivery threatened by design skills shortage
The IHBC has welcomed new research into Local Planning Authority (LPA) Urban Design (UD) skills and services by a team at UCL’s Bartlett School of Planning – supported by the Urban Design Group (UDG) and the PLACE Alliance – which both maps the serious design skills shortages in public services and highlights how these might constrain England’s housing delivery plans.

SCT launches IHBC-supported Annual Conference – 50 years of Conservation Areas and Trusts: 27 November, Glasgow
The Scottish Civic Trust (SCT) has launched its next Annual Conference, hosted in partnership with the IHBC, celebrating both 50 years of conservation areas and the 50th anniversary of the Trust, with reduced rates offered to IHBC members attending in Glasgow on 27 November.

Blackpool’s piers placed on WMF heritage watch list: Include GII listed
Blackpool’s three piers – including the Grade II (GII) listed North Pier – have been put on the 2018 ‘at risk’ list of the World Monuments Fund (WMF) due to the threats from the effects of climate change and changing tourism needs.

IHBC Marsh Awards 2018 launched: Nominations for retired IHBC members and New Heritage Learners – Closing end Feb 2018
The IHBC’s Marsh Awards, developed in partnership with the Marsh Christian Trust, has entered its third year with the launch of the 2018 Awards, to celebrate retired IHBC members and successful learners in heritage practice, with prizes that include £500 and a free place at the IHBC’s 2018 Annual School, and with a closing date of 28 February 2018.
