Chipperfield to lead restoration of Venice St Marks palazzo, closed to public for centuries
Sir David Chipperfield, whose work includes the Neues Museum in Berlin, will oversee the multi-million pound renovation of the 16th century Procuratie Vecchie, which will be opened to the public for the first time in 500 years when the project is completed in 2020, while Sir David says: ‘It’s a piece of surgery’…

Creative Industries Clusters Programme – Creative R&D Partnerships Call Launched
Statements of Intent are now invited for the Creative Research & Development (R&D) Partnership scheme, part of the Creative Industries Clusters Programme with statements of intent due by Friday 27 October at 4pm in order to be eligible to apply to Stage 1 and the deadline for Stage 1 applications is Thursday 7 December at 4pm.

IHBC Director co-chairs free joint technical ‘Heritage Buildings Seminar’: RGS London, 9 November
IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly will co-chair sessions at the free joint Exova BM TRADA and RSK seminar on ‘Heritage Buildings’ at the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) on 9 November, with topics ranging across structural and materials analysis, condition survey, and fire assessment.

IHBC’s John Edwards outlines ‘risk management in conservation projects’ on Conservation Wiki and DBW
IHBC trustee, director of Edwards Hart Chartered Surveyors and Historic Building Consultants, and lead author of ‘BS 7913, Guide to the conservation of historic buildings’ (2013) reviews issues around risk management in conservation projects in a recent article featured on IHBC’s Conservation Wiki, hosted by IHBC’s Wiki partner Designing Buildings Wiki, the construction sector’s knowledge base.

IHBC Manchester School’s Liverpool tour memories stoked by safety fears: Beatles grain silo mural demolition rubble threatens safety
Memories from the IHBC’s 2018 Manchester School’s Saturday tour of Liverpool may be stoked for some delegates as the concrete grain silo in Stanley Doc with The Beatles ‘Fixing a Hole’ artwork – viewed on the tour – is attracting tourists even during its demolition, but the work has just a few planks of wood to stop the rubble from falling into public spaces.

Only living architect to have all UK schemes listed wins RIBA Gold Medal
Neave Brown has been named the winner of the RIBA’s 2018 Royal Gold Medal, the only living architect to have had all his UK schemes listed, and perhaps best known for his visionary 1970s Alexandra Road estate near Swiss Cottage built by Camden Council.

Big Ben tower repair costs double to £61m
