IHBC congratulates first female winner of CIOB’s Construction Manager of the Year Award: ‘Raising the profile of women in construction’
The IHBC is delighted to congratulate Margaret Conway, project manager at McAleer & Rushe, who has secured CIOB-led Construction Manager of the Year Award (CMYA) for project leadership in Belfast – the first woman ever to win the overall title – and who, as one of only four female finalists to reach CMYA 2018, is using her success to inspire and encourage young people – especially women – to enter the industry.

IHBC CPD boost from DBW: ‘Check out that Playboy heritage’

9 of 10 Scots rate neighbourhood as ‘good place to live’ in Scottish Household Survey 2016, now out
Key findings from the Scottish Household Survey 2016, now issued, show that increasing numbers of people in Scotland feel they are managing well financially and nine out of ten people rate their neighbourhood as a good place to live some of the key findings from the Scottish Household Survey 2016.

Archaeology data vs conservation care @ Stonehenge: If loss = enlightenment, does destruction = benefit?
In response to a letter to the Times from British Archaeology editor Mike Pitts, supporting information benefits as justification for proposed development at Stonehenge –turning ‘loss into enlightenment’ – archaeology advocacy publication The Heritage Journal has published a summary retort stating that they ‘profoundly disagree’ with the equation ‘excavation = learning’.

Outrage and elation as Bolton listed mill demolition looks likely
According to press reports the demolition of a 520,000 sq ft listed mill complex in Bolton looks set to go ahead, in line with planning consent granted last year, after the Secretary of State confirmed he would not be intervening and Historic England withdrew its objections.

BCT & partners to preserve Brum’s rare 1945 prefab houses, first expected to last only a decade
The Birmingham Mail reports that experts – including the Birmingham Conservation Trust (BCT) are considering ways to preserve a much-loved row of prefab houses built in Birmingham as temporary accommodation in 1945.

The IHBC has welcomed Civic Voice’s call for an end to cuts to local conservation staff as it asks about the impact of conservation cuts and sends ministers and MPs the new, cross-sector ‘Conservation Professional Practice Principles’ to press for data that will help make ‘civic societies… part of the solution.

National Churches Trust shortlists for 2017 Church Architecture Awards announced
The Belarusian Memorial Chapel, the first wooden church built in London since the Great Fire of 1666; a new entrance for St Anne’s church in Soho featuring sleek glass doors and stylish neon lighting; and the restoration of the cupola and tower of St Peter and St Paul church in Blandford Forum in Dorset are featured in the shortlists for the 2017 Church Architecture Awards, run by the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association (EASA) and the National Churches Trust (NCT).

HLF: Independent review of 200 project evaluation reports says start data collection early!
An independent review of the evaluation reports of 200 Heritage Grants projects completed between 2008 and 2013 found that how comprehensively and how early the project invested in the evaluation impacted on the finished report quality.
