In response to a letter to the Times from British Archaeology editor Mike Pitts, supporting information benefits as justification for proposed development at Stonehenge –turning ‘loss into enlightenment’ – archaeology advocacy publication The Heritage Journal has published a summary retort stating that they ‘profoundly disagree’ with the equation ‘excavation = learning’.
Heritage Journal writes:
[The letter from Mike Pitts] says excavation = learning. Therefore excavating a large swathe of the Stonehenge landscape of all places for a road, against UNESCO’s wishes, should be welcomed.
We are only amateurs but we profoundly disagree. It seems to us to be a worryingly damaging stance.
