HE launches ‘Another England’: supporting ‘the stories of people of colour in England’

HE website image 241017Historic England (HE) is looking for people, groups and organisations to get involved in its ‘Another England’ project – to better understand the stories of people of colour in England – and tell HE about the places and histories that should be included and help find appropriate ways to acknowledge the important stories that come to light.

Historic England writes:

Black and Asian histories are a vital part of England’s story. Yet in our textbooks, at our historic sites and in our records they’re not well represented.

Another England will begin the work of understanding the stories of people of colour in England. It will create a public record of these histories and the places that are important to them. Working with people from these under-researched and under-represented groups, Another England will enrich the established history of England.

…The story of the people from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia who came to settle here as a result of our colonial history is also England’s story. In establishing new trade relationships and transporting enslaved Africans to the New World, in drawing boundaries and inventing new nation states in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, England has been forged. The arrival of people from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean has transformed and continues to transform the country. Another England has always and will always exist.

Another England combines insights from historians, architects and curators with a public campaign to gather personal histories and uncover a much broader picture of England’s past that encompasses the perspectives and histories of People of Colour. Pidgin Perfect and their project team have been commissioned by Historic England to take an innovative approach to exploring Black & Asian history and the nation’s buildings and spaces.
