IHBC’s journal Context now out: ‘Sport heritage’

The new issue of Context, the journal of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), the UK’s professional body for building and historic environment conservation specialists, is now out, and looks at the heritage of sport, featuring topics as diverse as pools, cricket pavilions and garden cities.

In an overview of the subject Anthony Calladine looks at the designation of historic sports infrastructure.  Chris Balme discusses plans to re-use the country’s oldest surviving public open-air swimming pools for their original purpose and as a visitor attraction.

Lynn Pearson looks at Britain’s historic cricket pavilions and the vulnerability of many of the pavilions.  Rob Sutton examines Moor Pool estate in Birmingham, the inspiration of the garden cities and garden suburbs movement where it was suggested that sport should be planned for as an essential part of normal life.

Themed issues of Context also include more general conservation articles as well as news, book reviews and reports from the IHBC’s officers.

Forthcoming Context themes include the IHBC’s Annual School on Significance, due in September, Market Towns (deadline 17 October) and Leisure (deadline January 2013)
