Over the last few months, the IHBC has been collaborating with expert speakers to deliver a series of free, online, pre-conference webinars for #IHBCReading2024, and as this series closes, and thoughts begin to turn to the Reading School, we would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to everyone who participated in the series, and all our School Sponsors and networks who helped make it possible.
IHBC’s 2024 Virtual School, from only £30+VAT (including select recordings)
…over 640 people registering for the events….nearly 300 attending live….hundreds more have benefitted from access to recordings…
The #IHBCReading2024 pre-School series began back in March, as Prof. John Edwards delivered his talk on ‘Applying BSI’s PAS 2038 in Retrofitting non-domestic Heritage and Traditional Buildings’ which was well attended and has since enjoyed over 200 views on our IHBC YouTube channel.
The series continued in May with yet another highly informative talk by empty homes and enforcement specialist Andrew Lavender, who walked us through the care of buildings through effective enforcement, as reported HERE. Following on from this, Architect Barnaby Wheeler gave us a detailed and insightful look at the conservation works to Reading Abbey ruins, noted HERE offering us an intriguing glimpse of what awaits those attending the Annual School later this month.
We were also fortunate to be joined by National Trust Curator Dr Caroline Ikin, who hosted a fascinating talk on the history of Munstead Wood, linked HERE, and the creative partnership between Gertrude Jekyll and Architect Edwin Lutyens that has shaped the history, and now the future management, of this important estate.
The series culminated in a highly thought provoking and inspiring session on heritage and conservation in Reading, led by Richard Bennett DL and Evelyn Williams, on behalf of Reading Civic Society, outlined HERE., offering a perspective on change and development in the city over the last 60 years and illustrating the important role of Civic Societies in shaping conservation and a sense of place in our communities, whilst also setting the scene for this year’s Annual School in June.
Engagement in the events was very positive, with over 640 people registering for the events, and nearly 300 attending live, whilst hundreds more have benefitted from access to recordings via the IHBC YouTube channel and Reading2024 website.
IHBC Education and Application Support Officer, Angharad Hart, said: ‘This is the third year that we have offered ‘pre-conference’ CPD in the run-up to the school, but the first to have a full programme of online content. It was a pleasure to work with the speakers, and colleagues alike, to make this happen.
We have had such a variety of topics, all linking to the Annual School theme, and all offering something unique and interesting. It has been extremely encouraging to see the interest and positive response from attendees to all the webinars in the series, which made quality CPD interesting and accessible to all’.
IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘We are especially grateful to our sponsors for supporting the Reading School, #IHBCReading2024, in particular our Principal Sponsor MFL Insurance Group, as they make these open and accessible events possible.
‘We are also delighted that the IHBC’s CREATIVE Conservation Fund could such play an active role in this wider programme too. This fund accepts allocations from the IHBC Charity as well donations from participants and helps us use those funds exclusively as we ‘Help Conservation People’, supporting anything from School bursaries and IHBC awards to research and more.
We would like to extend a special thank you to all those who gave their time and expertise to present these webinars and for being part of this new initiative. We look forward to building on this momentum and exploring how we can continue to deliver such events as part of next year’s school, in 2025.’
If you would like to attend this year’s Annual School you can still join the Virtual School online as a virtual delegate, max. £35 +VAT (with reductions for members and School networks).
