IHBC’s ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: Cockermouh panel to choose buildings for heritage list

Times and Star website 230118The Times and Star reports on how a Cockermouth group is welcoming plans to set up a panel to assess which buildings should be included on a local heritage list.

The Times and Star reports:

Allerdale council agreed to adopt a scheme for the designation of locally listed buildings in the borough in 2016. The purpose was to help protect buildings which are not listed but are considered to have some value and importance while considering future development proposals. The scheme relies on community groups to research and suggest buildings.

Cockermouth Civic Trust has suggested 18 buildings be considered for inclusion in the scheme. A local listings panel is consequently being set up to assess whether the buildings are suitable to be included. The panel will consist of: a councillor from Allerdale’s policy advisory group, a town councillor, a member of the civic trust and Allerdale’s conservation officer, Helen Brownlie.

Duncan Keeler, who will be representing the civic trust, said: ‘The perceived benefits are that assets important to the local community may be included on the Local Heritage List and although this does not give any statutory rights to those on the list the views must be considered during any planning application. We are keen that the scheme goes ahead and gives that added bit of protection to Cockermouth.’

The civic trust has nominated 18 buildings which they would like to see included. These are:

  • the Grand Theatre frontage, Station Road;
  • Papcastle Village Hall; Waterloo Street;
  • the facade of the old police station, Main Street;
  • the HSBC building, Main Street;
  • All Saints Rooms, off Kirkgate;
  • Ford Keeper’s Cottage, Quaker Bridge;
  • Old Railway Bridge, behind Aldi;
  • Cockermouth Library;
  • Brigham Memorial Hall;
  • Cumberland Building Society building, Station Street;
  • Kirkgate Theatre;
  • Gote Mill race, the remaining part of a former water mill;
  • Pepperpot House on Lamplugh Road;
  • Co-op facade, Station Street;
  • Barclays bank building, Main Street;
  • The Rope Walk, off Kirkgate and Market Place mosaics.
