IHBC CPD in Context: Traditional paving and its contribution to our experience of places

Context 152 p15David Harrison, in an article about floors of the great medieval churches explores how mosaics, patterned tiles, stone paving and commemorative stones are among the treasures that can be found underfoot in Britain’s great churches, and need to be fully appreciated and protected.

David Harrison writes:

‘We are too all prone to ignore the ancient floors beneath our feet. But if we do look down, we will see a variety of types of medieval floors, including intricate mosaics, patterned tiles, stone paving and commemorative ledger stones…’

‘… medieval floors have suffered a great deal… continue to be relaid, and threats to ancient floors remain, both from the feet of increasing numbers of visitors and from poor decisions.’

Reading Context ensures that IHBC members develop their skills across all of the IHBC’s Areas of Competence, and so is a critical baseline in addressing priorities in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
