Consultation draft revised NPPF out – focussed on housing support – closing 10 May
The draft revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) is now out for a consultation closing 10 May, with changes largely driven by housing concerns as demonstrated in the supporting documents and the more reserved position on sustainable development, as well as the reduction in references (and cross-references to heritage considerations).

Consultation update: Qualifications Wales proposals for Built Environment skills, closes 13 April
Qualifications Wales is inviting views on the options proposed following their built environment review of qualifications in Construction and the Built Environment – including recognising that the knowledge and skills for work on traditional and heritage buildings needs to be embedded in mainstream qualifications – with the consultation closing 13 April.

Theatres Trust announce new Theatre Improvement Scheme & final Urgent Repairs recipients in Wolfson Foundation partnership
The Theatres Trust, the national advisory public body for theatres, will be awarding four theatres a total of £54,520 in the final funding round of the Urgent Repairs Scheme, a funding scheme set up in partnership with the Wolfson Foundation to help theatres in need of immediate repair and maintenance.

UK’s longest treetop walkway for Conkers wins planning permission
Architects Cullinan Studio and multidisciplinary firm Arup have received planning permission on 9 February 2018 for the UK’s longest aerial walkway: a 400m-long (1,312ft) ribbon ‘floating through the treetops’ of the Conkers visitor attraction in Leicestershire.

IHBC responds to HE on ‘Dealing with contested heritage’: Make ‘Contested Heritage’ part of a bigger conservation picture
The IHBC has submitted its response on the consultation draft from Historic England (HE) concerning ‘Guidance on dealing with contested heritage’, highlighting that it ‘is in the nature of almost all heritage that it holds different values to different people’, so ‘HE should consider reframing this document, making ‘Contested Heritage’ part of a bigger conservation picture particularly in terms of presentation and interpretation of monuments and sites.’

IHBC’s President highlights C20 Soc’s modern CA seminar – ‘Making it happen’: 22 March, London, only £25
To mark the 50th anniversary of conservation areas (CAs), the Twentieth Century Society (C20 Soc) has been investigating modern conservation areas, and IHBC President David McDonald, who is helping on the programme, highlights an important seminar coming up on ‘new research into C20 conservation areas and… how they can support the regeneration of C20 built heritage’, in London on 22 March, with tickets only £25.

IHBC CPD boost on ‘Reading Design’: … as an architect explores how ‘Living in a house… is a full time job’!

IHBC’s ‘heritage from the doorstep’: ‘Devastated’ campaigners admit defeat on Ancoats Dispensary’
The Manchester Evening News has reported on how the listed Victorian gem The Ancoats Dispensary – on Old Mill Street – is to be handed over to Manchester council for affordable housing, ‘although town hall bosses say they will try to retain as much of its 19th century architecture as possible.’

Press release: Listed buildings under threat in Wales – heritage groups urge rethink of planning law reform
In a letter printed in The Times, nine national heritage organisations including SAVE Britain’s Heritage, the SPAB and the Ancient Monuments Society, call on the Welsh Law Commission and the Welsh Assembly to reject proposed changes to legislation that would abolish listed building consent and merge it with planning permission.

Insufficient community engagement renders out-of-scale village extension unacceptable
A mixed-use village extension based on garden city principles, including 325 new homes and community facilities, at an existing free-range chicken enterprise on the edge of a Lincolnshire village was refused for conflict with the local plan regarding the scale and distribution of development for the area, without clear community support demonstrated to determine otherwise.
