IHBC’s ‘heritage from the doorstep’: ‘Devastated’ campaigners admit defeat on Ancoats Dispensary’ 

buildingThe Manchester Evening News has reported on how the listed Victorian gem The Ancoats Dispensary – on Old Mill Street – is to be handed over to Manchester council for affordable housing, ‘although town hall bosses say they will try to retain as much of its 19th century architecture as possible.’

The Ancoats Dispensary Trust have announced that, following a failed bid for stage 2 HLF funding, they were left with no choice but to relinquish ownership of the Dispensary back to former owners Urban Splash. After one month of ownership, the building will revert back to the council who to convert it into affordable housing.

The Trust said that whilst they are disappointed that after five years work and over £1.1 million raised their dream of converting the Grade II-listed endangered building into a community space has ended, they are proud that the campaign was able to promote the building’s history and ultimately save it from demolition.
