IHBC CPD boost report from COTAC: A European take on risk management and disaster responses in communities
Ingval Maxwell, Chair of COTAC, the Council on Training in Architectural Conservation, offers IHBC members and colleagues a NewsBlog report back from a meeting of the European Civil Protection Forum, covering ‘Civil Protection in a Changing Risk Landscape’, in Brussels on 5 – 6 March, that looked at ‘Europe’s ability to prevent and respond to disasters’.

June opening for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries at Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey has announced that The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries will open to the public on 11 June 2018, while the museum galleries, set more than 50ft (16 metres) above the Abbey’s floor in the medieval Triforium, will display some of the greatest treasures from the Abbey’s collection.

Restored Victorian Pub in London Scoops Prestigious Pub Design Award
The Campaign for Real Ale has revealed the very best pub designs across Britain, which includes the ‘longest bar in Britain’, a 1930s neo-Georgian roadhouse, a former Victorian coffeehouse and a tastefully modern new build pub, all celebrating ‘an enormously wide variety of building styles and contexts.’

IHBC’s newest HESPR members: Four more companies recognised under our conservation services quality assurance scheme
Crenellated Arts, Hook Mason, Listed Building Surveys and Murphy Associates are now recognised under the IHBC’s quality assured conservation service HESPR listing – at hespr.ihbc.org.uk – adding to the more than 30 other conservation and heritage businesses currently listed on the institute’s Historic Environment Service Provider Recognition (HESPR) scheme.

IHBC Trustees and the 2018 AGM: Nominations close 20 April
At each Annual General Meeting (AGM) the IHBC elects, re-elects or appoints trustees and officers who are nominated and voted in by Full Members, with nominations to the next AGM closing on 20 April 2018, while the only officer reaching the end of a term this year is Vice Chair Kathy Davies and, whilst content to stand for one more year if required, Kathy is also happy to discuss the role with anyone who might like to take it on.

IHBC joins UDG, Civic Voice, Place Alliance and more calling for more design focus in the final NPPF: 11 April, London
The Urban Design Group (UDG) will co-host an evening of discussions on the progress on England’s Draft ‘NPPF’(National Planning Policy Framework) on 11 April, with the IHBC joining speakers from Civic Voice, Academy of Urbanism, Urban Design Group and more, all tied to plans for a joint response on design and the NPPF.

New Scotland Branch CPD on Conservation Areas: Penicuik (19 April), Ayr (11 May) and Aberdeen (Autumn)
IHBC’s Scotland Branch is offering CPD events tied to the recent 50th Anniversary celebrations of Conservation Areas in Scotland, with training days scheduled in Penicuik and Carlops (19 April) and Ayr and Maybole (11 May), and with a third planned for Aberdeen in the Autumn.

A £1m campaign to resurrect the Packhorse Public House in South Stoke has brought the village together, with ‘the biggest community pub buy-back project in British history’ as supporters hope it will inspire others, the Guardian reports.

IHBC’s ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: School, pub and ice house among winners of Wandsworth Design Awards
New student accommodation, a school, a theatre, a pub and the restoration of a listed ice house have all won awards in the 2017 Wandsworth Design Awards as ‘examples of top-quality contemporary designs as well as sensitive renovations of precious historical gems’, while both old and new address significant challenges in their historic environment.

VisitScotland research: Outlander and other film and TV hits bring record numbers of US tourists to Scotland
Record numbers of people from the US have come to Scotland this year seeking history, culture and ‘life enrichment’, and this has been sparked by the country’s appearance in recent films and TV programmes, especially historical sci-fi drama Outlander, according to research by VisitScotland.
