IHBC’s international CPD taster from Context 152: Gustavo Giovannoni on planning in historic towns
The architect, planner and architectural historian Gustavo Giovannoni (1873–1947) played an important role in integrating modern planning requirements into historic town centres in Italy and beyond, and his work is introduced in a Context article based on the commended IHBC Annual Student Award dissertation by Marc Piqué i Gascon from Bath University.

Prime Minister makes appointments to HLF/NHMF Board

LGA warns ‘barn conversion’ developments to heap more pressure on rural schools, roads and affordability
Rural areas face losing out on investment in infrastructure and affordable homes as a result of forthcoming planning changes that allow more new homes to avoid local approval, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

BBC updates on ‘The youngsters keeping traditional trades alive’
In 1999, the Labour government set out a pledge that half of all young people should go on to higher education – an aim that has almost been achieved; but BBC has met five of those youngsters who did not want to go down the academic route, and who have become apprentices in some of Britain’s oldest trades.

Twentieth Century Society report scopes out UK’s modern Conservation Areas
The Twentieth Century Society (C20) has published its scoping report on 20th century Conservation Areas in the UK, noting how often they are under-valued and vulnerable to redevelopment, and that increased Conservation Area designation could help to combat this threat.

Court ruling for switching off CCTV at times of worship
Churches now must switch off CCTV cameras during service as prayers should be private, a consistory court has recently ruled, a ruling believed to be the first made on the ethics of CCTV in church.

Civic Voice APPG update: Griff says without resourced councils England more ‘likely to end up with wrong homes in the wrong places’
Speaking during a meeting of the APPG for Civic Societies on March 13, Civic Voice President, Griff Rhys Jones argued that England’s draft National Planning Policy Framework has ‘No prospect of delivering 300,000 homes per year unless local councils given greater powers and resourced appropriately’.
