A new alliance of national organisations aimed at raising awareness of the quality of design in the built and historic environment will come together in London on 11 April as The Academy of Urbanism, Civic Voice, Design Network, the IHBC, Place Alliance and Urban Design Group together host a meeting to call on the Government ‘to get serious on design’ in the draft National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

Belfast, the setting of the IHBC 2018 School on 21-23 June, has seen its offerings as a maritime heritage destination given a major boost as two iconic attractions – the Great Light and Titanic Walkway – officially opened to the public in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter on 8 March, an event that also saw the launch of The European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) 2018 for Northern Ireland.

The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) visitor figures for 2017 always highlight the role of heritage in this key economic indicator, and saw an average increase in visitor numbers to UK attractions of 7.3%, while attractions in Scotland increased 13.9%, and in Northern Ireland 5.1%, though all the Top 10 most visited attractions were London based and the British Museum remained the most popular for the 11th year running.
