IHBC’s heritage business register HESPR – our Historic Environment Service Providers Recognition quality assurance scheme for heritage services – emails members weekly ‘News and Tender Alerts’, and this week’s special news features Building Design (BD) ‘Resurrecting Gaudi’s vision’.
IHBC writes of Daniel Gayne on BD’s ‘Resurrecting Gaudi’s vision:
… Gayne charts the journey of La Sagrada Família, Barcelona from near destruction in 1936 to a still on-going project in 2024… how revolutionaries during the Civil War targeted churches, including La Sagrada ‘as decades of accumulated resentment against clerical authoritarianism was unleashed’.
On 20 July 1936 it was targeted and ‘Drawings, photographs and letters were burnt, models were smashed, stones blocks destroyed, machinery vandalised and site buildings razed to the ground’.
La Sagrada was thought, in the UK, to be a ‘lost project’….[but] the project had been kept alive by Gaudí’s disciples, who had spent the years after the civil war scraping together what was left behind by the anarchists.
