… each post relies in some way on the holistic and interdisciplinary standards in the IHBC’s conservation accreditation…

IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘Our NewsBlog updates on career opportunities posted on the ‘IHBC’s Jobs etc.’ service attest to the huge variety of roles that employers are looking to us to help fill.’

Our ‘Jobs etc. posts typically range widely across sectors, skills, employers, locations and roles, just like the IHBC, but all have one key consideration in common: they target IHBC members and networks for their unique, interdisciplinary skills sets and profiles in their search for the person with the perfect ‘fit,’ of competence, knowledge and experience in conservation and related disciplines and roles.’

‘The current round of postings continues to spotlight the expanding engagement with our services and standards by employers across facilities, building, area and estate care and management.  In particular, for this round, we will spotlight the conservation compliant roles and skills that we’ll be interrogating especially closely at our forthcoming 2024 Reading school programme across 12-15 June: #IHBCReading2024.

‘We can start this review with smaller employers with area and estate care responsibilities – such as The Spitalfields Trust which seeks a Buildings Restoration and Operations Manager, and the more longstanding opportunities at Inverness City Heritage Trust for a Manager, and Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust for a Director of Estates and Preservation.  These types of roles extend to some of the nation’s most important heritage estate owners, which this round include English Heritage, which seeks an Estate Manager and a Building Conservation Manager.’

‘Such roles also encompass the practical, building-focussed skills sets that lie at the heart of the IHBC’s holistic conservation of buildings and areas.  Here national players lead the way: The National Trust seeks a Senior Building Surveyor and Building Surveyor and Historic England calls for a Conservation Architect or Surveyor.  At the same time Historic England is also looking to recruit across more policy-based areas – again linked to a target areas in our 2024 School – as it calls for a Senior Building Conservation Advisor and a Team Leader – Development Advice.’

‘The advisory role also ties into the IHBC’s historic links to local government conservation.  Though the IHBC now represents a much wider constituency of members than conservation officers, those ties are still vibrant, and evident especially in the ongoing prominence across our service supporting conservation-related posts in local government.  This round includes Windsor & Maidenhead’s call for a Senior Conservation Officer and the Test Valley ‘s Building Conservation Officer (Planning and Building) post.’

Clearly, even at quieter times such as these, local government in the UK continues to look to IHBC members to fill their critical posts.  This is to be expected of course, especially given our shared understanding of public interest and duties.’

‘At the same time, the same consultation and community engagement that looks back to our local government roots is also evident in ecclesiastical and related roles linked to the management and care of places of worship.  For example the Church of England (Birmingham) looks to us to identify Care of Churches Officer (CCO) and ‘Volunteer Professional Advisors – Building Services, Sustainability, and the Environment’.  That role is evident also at the Diocesan level, as Chelmsford, Newcastle and Carlisle call for Church Buildings Support Officers as the best way to deliver outcomes linked to new, targeted heritage focussed funding.’

‘Altogether these posts show how estate-holding bodies with heritage interests, just as much as local authorities, recognise the importance of dedicated IHBC-modelled conservation skills sets across the management of their resources.   They also register just how wide-ranging are the practice areas covered by the IHBC’s Areas of Competence, notably, here and at our Reading Annual School, the Area of Competence corresponding to the ‘Management’ of assets and resources.  And regardless of levels of roles or scales of experience, each post relies in some way on the holistic and interdisciplinary standards in the IHBC’s conservation accreditation.’

‘Of course the private sector is responsible for the care and curation of the vast majority of our heritage resources.  So it is both gratifying and heartening to see the high regard for our standards across some of the best of the more commercially-focussed operations. And, in confirmation, this round we see Stephen Levrant Heritage Architecture Ltd looking for an ‘Experienced Built Heritage Consultant’, HCUK Group for a Heritage Consultant – Director, and Janus Conservation Ltd: Historic Building Surveyor.

If the scale of posts on our Jobs etc  service just now is less dramatic than in more recent years – reflecting as it does wider economic pressures – they diversity still capture well the exceptionally wide spectrum of relevant roles encompassed by the IHBC’s accreditation model, the IHBC Areas of Competence, and the skills represented there.’

‘To find out more on such matters, our MATE  and related sessions support accreditation, while they also delve into the IHBC’s Competences and Conservation Cycle.  As such they help applicants’ align their skills to the principles we use to assess interdisciplinary competence, all in line with national and international conservation practice standards.’
