CSkills consultation: understanding repair etc

ConstructionSkills is seeking comments regarding the development of the new draft understanding unit ‘Understanding Repair and Maintenance of Traditional (Pre-1919) Buildings’, intended as a first introduction to conservation for craftspeople, with responses tojacqui.chivers@cskills.org by 31 March.

CSkills says:

A new Single Unit entitled Understanding Repair & Maintenance of Traditional (Pre-1919) Buildings is currently being developed on behalf of the built heritage sector of the construction industry by ConstructionSkills Qualifications & Standards and National Specialist Teams.

Unit Content

This new unit has been derived from the mandatory unit 546 Working on Conservation & Restoration projects in the Workplace from the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Heritage Skills. The 546 is a competency based unit with 300 notional learning hours and must be assessed in the workplace, so the knowledge aspects within that unit were stripped back and used to further develop this new ‘Understanding’ Unit (Level 3, 2 Credits).

The unit content was also mapped against a two day pilot course programme to be delivered by the Painting & Decorating Association (PDA) in May 2011. Although the unit is generic in nature, other 2-day modular short courses based on this can be adapted to cover the specific heritage skills craft occupations. The course content must be pitched at the right level for craftspeople; this can also be adapted for delivery to site supervisors and managers or designers and specifiers.

The new unit and inter-related modular training course cover:

  • Why pre-1919 buildings are important and valued
  • Statutory controls and consents governing this type of work
  • The approach to successful repair and maintenance
  • Research and investigations to inform decision-making
  • An over-view of traditional building methods and materials
  • Project planning and delivery and site responsibilities.
