Taking the Plunge for Heritage

North of England Civic Trust (NECT) is promoting a radical and pro-active fundraising strategy for its heritage skills programme, Heritage Skills Initiative (HSI), by arranging a bungee jump linked (but not tied) to a black tie dinner, arranged by Andie Harris – IHBC member and NECT’s Learning and Skills Manager!

Andie says:

Join us for a sponsored bungee jump from the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge – the ONLY bridge bungee jump in the UK to raise funds for HSI.

Kevin McCloud and Dr Jonathan Foyle will be climbing the Bridge on the morning of Saturday 11th June with the press on hand and then they will count down those brave enough to bungee from the 160ft Transporter Bridge throughout the afternoon.

Come and join us and Take a Plunge for Heritage!

You will receive a picture and DVD of your jump.  A deposit of £100 is required and a minimum sponsorship of £250 raised a week before event.

HSI Background

Initiated by the North East Heritage Environment Forum and hosted by NECT, the Heritage Skills Initiative (HSI) has identified how severe the skills shortage is in the region and how it is responding to that gap. It has determined ways of stemming the increasing heritage skills shortage by examining opportunities, raising awareness and creating the training and partnership opportunities needed to address the skills gap in those trades required to restore and maintain the historic environment.

The team run a full training and events programme across the North East, Cumbria and North Yorkshire for professionals and craftspeople, which are regularly oversubscribed. The team also work as a consultant for English Heritage and Natural England on including training in their grant giving via the procurement process, work as a HLF Mentor and Associate Monitor and write training plans for organisations wishing to include training in the Historic Environment into their projects.

We also run the Engineering Heritage Skills Initiative which provides eight annual bursaries for people to gain experience in organisations such as Beamish Museum, NRM Locomotion, Bowes and Tanfield Railways and learn to maintain the large objects and keep them in working order for future generations to understand and enjoy.
