IHBC opens Newcastle conference booking

The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) has opened booking for its forthcoming conference, ‘Conservation: Bridging the recession’, to take place in Newcastle on 24  September 2010.

IHBC Past President David Lovie, a member of the IHBC’s North Branch which is organising the event, and IHBC President Eddie Booth, issued a joint statement saying: “Sadly it seems that cutbacks are the order of the day.  So it’s essential that professional bodies such as the IHBC lead the way in responding to them.  It is especially important to our profession as we know that local authority services are the most effective way to enhance and deliver valued places for local communities. We’ll be looking at new ways to develop conservation projects in a major international conference in Glasgow on November 18th, and at wider challenges to services in our Annual School in Wales in 2011.  But to  kick-start the process we’re promoting this highly focussed discussion among conservation practitioners and their colleagues.”

IHBC Branch Chair and lead conference organiser, Stewart Ramsdale, said: “We’re aiming to  address the issues of resourcing heritage management in the context of public sector cutbacks, and how conservation and historic environment services in the public, private and voluntary sectors can come together to develop new ways of thinking to respond to them.  As delegate numbers are strictly limited, it’s essential that anyone interested book their place as soon as possible.”

IHBC Director, Seán O’Reilly, said: “The conference will accompany an IHBC networking reception on the 23rd, to which we’ll invite key figures in the industry.  We’ll also have the IHBC’s Trustees along, all skilled conservation professionals, as the event is part of the annual showcasing of the IHBC’s national organisation in major centres across the UK.  It’s also great that both Newcastle City Council and the North of England Civic Trust are supporting our programme, as we are demonstrates just how we can to work together to make sure that our valued  places are managed and improved as effectively as possible.”
