IHBC North Branch Chair Roger Higgins said: ‘IHBC’s North Branch is very pleased to be hosting the 2026 Annual School and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in June.’

‘We have a great range of speakers lined up and some amazing study tours, showcasing the best of northeast regeneration and adaptive reuse. Don’t miss this opportunity to see Newcastle upon Tyne and its fabulous historic buildings.’

IHBC Chair David McDonald said: ‘‘After a huge amount of preparation and work across our North Branch and National Office, I am delighted that booking for the IHBC’s 2026 School is now open.  And this year we are offering members and colleagues our familiar and unique suite of accessible learning from historic Newcastle upon Tyne and its impressive surroundings.

‘Our Annual Schools hone in on aspects of IHBC Competences that will benefit even the most experienced Conservation Professionals. Adaptive re-use can be one of the most challenging of conservation issues.  This School offers a very accessible way to sharpen your skills whatever your discipline or career stage – and a great value way too, particularly with the Digital School rates.’

‘That is why this School’s CPD opportunity shouldn’t be missed. Whether you join us online or in person, let’s all look for solutions to current heritage challenges in 2026 in June, online – and if you can, in-person – from Newcastle.

‘In that context too, as well as offering my sincere thanks to the North Branch for their hard work, I am also especially pleased to confirm that the Annual Day School will open with a welcome from Dr Anna Keay OBE, Director of the Landmark Trust.  Many thanks indeed Anna!’

Dr Anna Keay said: ‘I am very much looking forward to discussing the Landmark Trust’s experience of the exciting possibilities of reusing old buildings with delegates at the IHBC conference.’

The IHBC’s Full School in Newcastle (18–20 June) will include a rich and varied programme designed to inform, inspire, and support continuing professional development.

  • CPD Study Tours 1: Thursday 18 June will begin with a series of CPD Study Tours, offering delegates the opportunity to explore significant buildings and places across the region, with a focus on this year’s theme, Adaptive Reuse.
  • Welcome Reception: The day will conclude with a Welcome Reception at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, a former flour mill and a celebrated example of Adaptive Reuse, overlooking the River Tyne and the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
  • Day School: Friday 19 June will host the Day School, featuring a diverse programme of speakers and discussions exploring adaptive reuse in practice. The Day School will be held at The Common Room, a historic Grade II* listed venue in the heart of the city, and can be attended in person or online.
  • School Dinner & Award presentations: Friday will round off with the Annual School Dinner and Award presentations on our Student and March Award programmes, all hosted in the Grade II listed Royal Station Hotel.
