IHBC CPD boost: Deal Society deliver workshop explaining their process for community led conservation area appraisals
As part of the recent Civic Voice convention, over 20 workshops were held to give communities the chance to consider how they could play a greater role in local heritage management including carrying out conservation area appraisals, with a particular feature of the weekend was considering how civic societies can support local authorities through conservation area appraisals.

Council rubber stamps Conservation Area for Grimsby Port’s Kasbah site: ‘England’s newest Conservation Area’ in 50th anniversary year

Belfast City Council to splash out on Templemore historic baths
Belfast City Council is planning a £17m revamp of Victorian Templemore pool, one of the oldest swimming pools in Belfast, into a 21st Century leisure centre and spa, but is relying on securing funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to complete the project.

Built Environment Forum Scotland (BEFS) is calling for examples of where multiple owners within a tenement have been unable to agree on maintenance and this has resulted in the need for extensive repair or local authority intervention.

DCMS responds to petition calling for interim protection in listing considerations
DCMS has responded to a petition – signed by nearly 7,000 and coming after a developer destroyed a Jacobean ceiling in Bristol to prevent a building being listed – calling for interim protection for buildings being considered for listing by Historic England, with DCMS stating: ‘Historic England is currently re-examining the issue of interim protection in the light of recent cases’.

Public service research: Whitehall needs to focus on preventative policies
Whitehall is regularly drawn into costly and reactionary spending cycles to mitigate crises within the NHS and adult social care, but this extra money is not sorting out any of the underlying problems these services face, suggests the latest Performance Tracker report from the Institute for Government (IfG) and Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).

RTPI planners to create Brexit border scenarios for Ireland
At a joint conference in Dundalk between Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Ireland and RTPI Northern Ireland, planners in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland agreed to work together to create scenarios for a ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ Brexit.

As a collective of built environment interests has launched a social enterprise that aims to get early career planners (and architects) within local government to help deliver more housing, the IHBC highlights the presence of ‘over half a million un-actioned planning permissions’; the lack of skills and capacity across local authorities (LAs), and the need to ensure balanced outcomes across the wider planning services.
