IHBC’s ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: Cumbria Crack and the ‘End of wind turbine ‘blight’ after Lake District campaign’
A dozen 140ft wind turbines on the edge of the Lake District are due to be dismantled next summer after a decision which could result in many more being removed to restore views.

IHBC CPD boost from Scotland: ‘Architectural conservation solves 21C environmental, social and economic challenges’
Dr Cristina González-Longo – Director at the IHBC recognised conservation course at Strathclyde – explains how Scotland’s identity is closely linked to its historic buildings, ranking in the Nation Brands Index at 12 out of 50 nations for its reputation of being rich in cultural heritage, and that heritage is also important for Scottish economy and society as, according to the 2016 Scotland’s Historic Environment Audit, it contributes in excess of £2.3 billion to Scotland’s economy.

Civic Voice Design Awards 2018 open for applications
The Civic Voice Design Awards 2018 is open for applications, with Civic Voice highlighting categories that include showing how ‘new development can enhance a conservation area’, and the ceremony to be held in The Leadenhall Building, the second tallest building in the City of London.

Design Council study details value of design
Design Council has published Designing a Future Economy, a study that presents a powerful picture about the value of design, with headlines including issues such as that skills shortages and gaps amongst those already working in design-skilled occupations costs the UK economy £5.9bn per year.

Government funding for innovation in energy efficiency and heating technologies for the built environment
Across Government, Innovate UK, Research Councils, and the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) expect to invest around £184 million in research and innovation in the built environment, and as part of this commitment, within the BEIS Energy Innovation Programme, BEIS expects to invest around £90 million in low carbon heating and energy efficiency options for UK homes and businesses.

Government admits HS2 demolition comparisons between Meadowhall and M18 routes were incorrect
A comparison of housing demolition figures used to help justify changing the HS2 route through South Yorkshire was wrong by at least 40 per cent, the Government has admitted.

Taylor Review on ‘Sustainability of English Churches and Cathedrals’ out: Calls for more access to churches
An independent review, chaired by Bernard Taylor, into the sustainability of Church of England Church and Cathedral buildings, has been published by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, which calls for churches to be opened up for new and different uses by communities, to help build a more sustainable future for the buildings.

Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016 — Fact sheets on provisions etc
Cadw notes that the greater part of the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016 (the 2016 Act) has been in force since May 2017 and three fact sheets have been prepared to describe important changes in the protection and management of scheduled monuments and listed buildings in Wales.

How to design an infrastructure strategy for the UK? Let people shape the outcomes, says IoG on infrastructure decision-making in the UK
Government should create a new commission to involve local people in major infrastructure projects, according to the Institute for Government (IfG) in a report that identifies three challenges to be overcome to build an effective national strategy for infrastructure and argues for increased public engagement to reduce delays by giving people a genuine opportunity to influence decisions.
