A timely ‘IHBC CPD boost’ for Belfast 2018 from the BBC, featuring Belfast Buildings Trust’s ‘Carlisle Memorial’ case study
The BBC has featured the recent rise in fortunes of Belfast’s Carlisle Memorial Methodist Church, of 1875 – designed by W.H. Lynn, a one-time partner of the more familiar Charles Lanyon – which is also a case study included the IHBC 2018 School’s Thursday tour options, led by Shane Quinn of the Belfast Buildings Trust.

RTPI challenges apprenticeship body’s assessment plan ruling
The RTPI has challenged the Institute for Apprenticeships’ (IfA) ability in assessing professional standards, after the latter has rejected the assessment plan of a degree-level apprenticeship that the Chartered Town Planner Apprenticeship Trailblazer Employer Group has developed with the RTPI.

Scotland’s Culture Secretary orders review as St Peter’s Seminary future again uncertain with closure of arts company NVA
St Peter’s Seminary, one of Scotland’s most acclaimed modernist buildings – with plans featured at the IHBC’s Edinburgh Annual School in 2014 – seemed to have found new hope with the ground breaking arts company NVA, but that future has been derailed since the announcement that the company will close in September this year.

IHBC & partners on Design & the NPPF –update on government ‘getting serious on design’
The IHBC and partners including Civic Voice, Place Alliance and the Urban Design Group, have written to the Secretary of State at England’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) asking government ‘to use the opportunity provided by the revision of the National Planning Policy Framework [NPPF] to more forcefully demonstrate the desire of the Government to see better design everywhere’.

Going to School in Belfast 2018? Don’t forget your CPD preparations
The IHBC is continually exploring new support for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) at our Annual Schools – they are ‘Schools’ after all – and for 2018 members can now also prepare better for studies, talks, visits and networking by using our web guidance and links on the Belfast School site, especially for the Day School speakers and tours on the Thursday and the Saturday.

Historic Chapels Trust and CCT partnering for strategic review
The Historic Chapels Trust (HCT) and the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) will be working together in 2018/19 as the CCT takes over the day to day running of HCT, including its 20 historic chapels, for a period of one year whilst a strategic review of HCT takes place.

THA & members’ response to VAT policy enquiry: Highlighting ‘…current VAT regime [as] one of the biggest threats to the future of our built heritage’

DCMS calls for more research on diversity and place-making now under fire
Senior arts researchers have hit back at a report from Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) that is taken as implying knowledge gaps in key policy areas, saying it highlights the Department’s limited awareness of existing research literature and lack of institutional memory.

CPRE says countryside being lost to housing at alarming rate, despite increase in brownfield development
New government data shows that despite promising signs of an increase in brownfield development, greenfield land is still being lost to housing development at an unnecessary rate. The amount of farmland, forests, gardens and greenfield land lost to housing development each year has increased by 58% over the past 4 years, according to an analysis by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).
