IHBC’s ‘after the AGM is over’: Re-elections, ratifications and remembering Eddie

The IHBC’s AGM in Belfast, on 22 June, re-elected the IHBC’s national officers and ratified Branch representative nominations in line with the AGM papers, and concluded with a reflective but uplifting tribute by IHBC President David McDonald that explored the many contributions of the late and fondly admired Eddie Booth to his, and our, Institute.

IHBC & partners on draft ‘NPPF & Design’ featured in Designing Buildings Wiki (DBW)
The IHBC partnership calling for better design standards in the evolving National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) has been featured in the weekly Newsletter of Designing Buildings Wiki (DBW) – host partner of the IHBC’s Conservation Wiki – and sent to DBW’s 7500+ registered users, extending further the heritage sector’s reach across the development and construction sector.

IHBC’s ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: Hull City Council offers TLC to Victorian lamps on King Billy’s statue
Four ornamental lamps dating from the late 1800s have disappeared from Hull’s oldest public statue, Hull live writes, but it explains that the good news is that they haven’t been stolen – instead, they’re just undergoing some much-needed ‘TLC’.

GI Listed Gwrych Castle saved for the nation: a fairytale Welsh castle once destined for royalty
After 50 years of uncertainty and having fallen into a perilous state-of-disrepair, the future of Grade I (GI) listed Gwrych Castle, Abergele in North Wales – one of Wales’s most important and fairytale-like country houses, that was set to become a royal residence – is now secure, with Gwrych Preservation Trust leading future works.

Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City to remain on World Heritage in Danger list, but retain World Heritage Status
The World Heritage Committee (WHC) has retained Liverpool on the List of World Heritage in Danger but it is to retain its World Heritage Status subject to production of a revised Draft State of Conservation Report (DSOCR) and a report on the state of conservation of the property for examination by the World Heritage Committee at its 43rd session in 2019.

Environment secretary Michael Gove has set out plans to create 41 new Marine Conservation Zones across the UK, totalling nearly 12,000 square kilometres of marine habitats, in a consultation on the Third Tranche of Marine Conservation Zones, which closes 20 July.

Baroness Brown of Cambridge appointed as chair of the Carbon Trust
Julia King, Baroness Brown of Cambridge, has been appointed Chair of the Carbon Trust from July 2018, when she will take on the role from James Smith, former Chair of Shell UK, who has served in the post since 2011.

IHBC’s ‘Heritage from the US doorstep’: CNN reports from ‘Inside Westminster Abbey’s $30M secret attic’, by Ptolemy
American news broadcaster CNN recently featured the ‘jewel-like tower’ that is Westminster Abbey’s ‘first new structural addition in 250 years’, designed by the abbey’s official surveyor – Ptolemy Dean – as, ‘tucked away in an intersection of the 1,000-year-old building’s Gothic façade, it leads to a treasure-filled attic that has never been opened to public — until now.’

Going to IHBC’s 2018 School in Derry-Londonderry on Saturday? New Derry Walls Management Plan launched
An updated version of the Derry Walls management plan has been published, setting out practical information on how the walls are managed, delegation of responsibilities and what permissions are required to stage events or carry out works, complementing the Conservation Plan of 2015 which set out agreed policies to guide the overall development of the monument.

MaintenanceBooker: A new heritage website ‘to help end the misery of leaking church roofs’
MaintenanceBooker is a new heritage website set by a partnership that includes the National Churches Trust – the UK’s church building support charity – intended to help ‘keep historic churches and chapels safe for the future’, which was launched following a successful Heritage Lottery Fund pilot project in Yorkshire.
