Repair and re-use of historic buildings benefit Anglesey

Welsh Government Môn a Menai funding has supported two projects in Anglesey island, helping bring historic buildings back into use and create new spaces to benefit the local economy.

The Welsh Government writes:
Two projects which take advantage of Anglesey’s rich heritage will be a boost for the island’s tourism industry, Housing and Regeneration Minister Carl Sargeant said today.

The Minister was visiting the Sail Loft at Amlwch Port and Prince’s Pier at Menai Bridge, both of which are managed by Menter Môn and have received funding from the Welsh Government’s Môn a Menai programme.

The Sail Loft will be totally refurbished into a café and restaurant including a small exhibition area.  Menter Môn is working closely with the Amlwch Industrial Heritage Trust to ensure that these developments at Amlwch Port including the new Copper Kingdom Centre will attract locals and visitors alike to learn about the history of the area.  During the late 18th Century Amlwch employed 1500 and was a major town in Wales. The Welsh Government has contributed £160,000 to the project.

The refurbishment of the Prince’s Pier building at Menai Bridge is nearing completion and will include business units for let and a space for a presentation on Anglesey’s two iconic bridges.  The building, which is a former warehouse and pilot’s cottage, had been derelict for 30 years and is an excellent location on the banks of the Menai Strait.   It is being developed in partnership with the Menter Mon and Menai Bridge Heritage Trust.  The Welsh Government has contributed £195,000 towards the project

The Minister said: ‘Both these projects involve the restoration of historic buildings on the island which are part of the area’s rich heritage.  Both are in locations which benefit from visitors and will make a valuable contribution to the tourism industry of the area.

‘I’d like to congratulate the teams working on these projects which help raise awareness of the rich history and culture of the area.’
