Philip Webb Award: Can you demonstrate innovation in conservation?

Architecture students are invited to enter the prestigious 2009 SPAB Philip Webb Awards.  This unique competition aims to encourage new design in the context of historic buildings by challenging students to create an imaginative and sensitive revitalisation scheme for a building or group of buildings of historic interest, but currently subject to neglect or decay.

As Britain’s oldest conservation organisation, SPAB (The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) offers this award in memory of architect Philip Webb, who, with William Morris, was one of the main founders of the Society in 1877.  From the earliest days, Webb devoted time to teaching young architects the principles and methods of practical conservation and SPAB maintains that educational tradition today.

The competition is open to all students at UK Schools of Architecture who have achieved RIBA Pt. I and who are working towards RIBA Pt. II. The award aims to develop students’ appreciation of the unique needs and demands of old buildings by asking them to undertake a drawing-board project that strengthens their understanding of architectural and historical value along with their knowledge of the purpose, philosophy and techniques of conservation.

SPAB Seeks Scholars for 2010 – a unique opportunity

The search is on for four young professionals from the world of architecture and building for the unique SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) Scholarship 2010. The successful applicants will hit the road together next year on a journey of architectural discovery that will take them the length and breadth of Britain via some of the country’s most fascinating ongoing conservation projects.

SPAB’s prestigious Scholarship aims to give talented and enthusiastic young people at the beginning of their career first-hand experience of conservation, visiting and working on site and in craftsmen’s workshops and studios throughout the UK. It is a training opportunity that has no equivalent. Former SPAB scholars are today among the UK’s leading conservation experts, caring for many of the most significant buildings in Britain – some are cathedral architects, some look after palaces, National Trust houses and English Heritage site.
