Ancient woods ‘at risk from government offsetting scheme’

Developers could be ‘allowed to destroy ancient woodland if they agree to plant 100 trees for every one felled’, according to reports attributed to Environment secretary Owen Paterson.

Paterson has suggested that his proposed ‘biodiversity offsetting’ scheme could apply to 400-year-old woodland. The newspaper says that under the scheme, ‘the destruction of a wildlife habitat is balanced by funding for environmental improvements in other locations’. Paterson said that offsetting schemes could be an ‘hour’s drive’ from the original site, the newspaper reports.
