IHBC Annual School 2014 – first headline speaker: Jukka Jokilehto

The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) is delighted to announce that the recognised authority on international conservation practice and standards in architecture, Prof Jukka Jokhileto, will speak to delegates at the IHBC’s next Annual School, in Edinburgh on 6 June 2014.

Professor Jokilehto is Special Advisor to the Director General of ICCROM and Extraordinary Professor at the University of Nova Gorica, as well as author of the standard text on conservation history, ‘A History of Architectural Conservation’.

On expressing his delight at being able to accept the invitation to the IHBC’s Annual School, the UK’s key national conference for built and historic environment conservation specialists, Prof Jokilehto wrote: ‘My theme would deal with the philosophy and conservation theory, exploring the relationship of culture and science’.

IHBC Chair Mike Brown said: ‘I’m delighted we can have such an international authority contributing his thoughts on the challenges raised by our School theme for 2014, ‘The art of conservation’.  Professor Jokilehto is perfectly placed to deliver the kind of internationally recognised base-line perspectives that delegates will value as we interrogate this issue in detail.’

‘As ever the IHBC School will also have a wide range of other expertise and perspectives on offer, with lots of hard evidence and practice to balance consideration of the principles.  For example the IHBC’s own research team will present a small body of work, funded by the institute, on policy-related aspects of artistic and aesthetic judgements in professional practice across the UK.  A perfect national complement to the international authority provided by Prof Jokilehto.’
