Welcome to the September issue of the IHBC CPD Circular. In this very full edition we are pleased to highlight a diverse range of affordable CPD events which cover all of the IHBC CPD competencies, and which we hope will assist members in meeting their professional CPD requirements (at all levels) as well as appealing to their personal interests. It includes some fantastic opportunities, some more well known than others, from courses abroad, to a free day of clay building, discussion and demos of heritage building skills, and a special two-day event celebrating the 80th anniversary of the 1946 New Towns Act and the launch of the late Elain Harwood’s final major publication, New Towns Mark One: Architecture and Planning in Post-War Britain (2026).

The autumn is proving a busy time for branches with many events and AGM’s planned for September and October already, so please do ‘save the dates’.
Join South East Branch for two contrasting events in September. The first is a site visit and summer picnic at Amberley Museum on Friday 4 September.
This is a unique opportunity to visit this historic site, located on the former site of the Amberley chalk pits. The museum provides a centre where the industrial and social history in the south-east has been conserved and interpreted in an active working environment. The day will start at 10am with a curator’s tour of the Museum and chalk pits site, and will be followed by a group networking picnic lunch at the site (BYO picnic). Partners, families and children are welcome.
In the afternoon there is the opportunity of a site visit to the Scheduled Amberley Castle to view and hear about the ongoing works from Kevin Symonds of Traditional Stone. Details HERE.
Later in the month on 23 September, South East Branch are hosting one of the Branch Partnership events entitled ‘Placemaking & Design: Planning for Historic Areas’, which will be led by IHBC member Dave Chetwyn. The event will take place at the Brighton Friends Meeting House, Brighton. For those who don’t know Dave, he is Managing Director and Partner of Urban Vision Enterprise CIC and a Director/Partner of D2H Land Planning Development. Dave’s experience and expertise includes mediation between public bodies, complex planning negotiations, planning for historic areas, heritage-led regeneration, neighbourhood planning, statutory consultation (legal compliance) and third sector organisational development.
The training will address various IHBC competences, including philosophy and theory, practice, design and presentations, historic and architectural interest, legislation and policy and economics with a focus on different aspects of placemaking, design and planning for historic places. Details HERE
On 15 September the West Midlands Branch are hosting a full day of CPD at the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley. The event is focusing on the ‘Recreation, Replication, Translocation & Conservation’ of buildings at the museum, and the day will include discussion and a tour of its major capital development ‘BCLM: Forging Ahead’ -the largest project in its history. On 24 September please do join London Branch at Walworth Town Hall for a late afternoon tour of the building led by Southwark Council Design and Conservation Team Leader Catherine Jeater and architect Julia Feix (Feix and Merlin), followed by their AGM at 6pm with time afterwards for drinks and socialising amongst colleagues. On the same day, join Wales Branch for an informal after-work gathering to learn more about the IHBC, chat about Welsh heritage, and connect with others in the sector. The event will be held at the Cardiff City Arms between 17:00 and 21:00 on 24 September and everyone is welcome – whether you’re an IHBC member or simply interested in built heritage. Details HERE
Lastly as September ends, join Northern Ireland Branch representatives on 28 September together with major heritage agencies and funders, local authorities, community heritage leaders, regeneration and conservation experts from across the UK for the Heritage Network Conference 2026 in Belfast and Armagh. Drop by the IHBC stand for an informal chat and to find out more about the branch and the work of the IHBC.
Looking ahead to October, save the date for several branch events and AGM’s.
IHBC Scotland Branch are holding the ‘Fire Protection in Historic Buildings’ Branch Partnership Event on the 1 October, this in-person event will be held at the Royal George Hotel, George Street, Perth, PH1 5LD.
On Tuesday 6 October, East Midlands Branch are holding their AGM in conjunction with a topical day entitled ‘Retrofitting Traditional and Historic Buildings’. This in-person event will be held at the Dunlop-Butler Room, Lincoln Cathedral Visitor Centre and Gardens and will be led by leading expert Professor John Edwards, IHBC Technical Panel Chair and Director of Edwards Hart Consultants.
The next regional ‘Fire Safety in Historic Buildings’ Branch Partnership CPD event will be hosted by Wales Branchon Wednesday 21 October. National Trust Cymru (NTC) have kindly offered Chirk Castle and Erddig Hall (Wrexham) as venues for what is shaping up to be a fascinating day. This one day course provides an introduction to, and awareness of, the spread and growth of fire in traditional and historic buildings. Hear from Steve Emery at Heritage Fire Consultancy, Donald Insall Associates, Charles Thomas Heritage Fire and the NTC teams about planning and implementing fire safety projects in historic buildings. In addition to the training led by Steve Emery, this day will also include a tour of a live case study at Erddig Hall.
On the 21 October, West Midlands Heritage Trust are joined by West Midlands Branch for the WMHT Careers Fair in Worcester Cathedral. Students and those looking for a career in heritage are welcome at this special event. Meet industry professionals in the sector and learn from the useful talks and demonstrations on offer.
On the 27 October, the IHBC are trialling a regional branches event, which it is hoped will be adopted by other regional branches. The branch partnership ‘Enforcement in the Historic Environment’ event is being hosted by IHBC South, South East and London Branches and will be online and in-person at the Alan Baxter Gallery, 75 Cowcross Street, London. It will be led by the IHBC specialist in this area Bob Kindred MBE IHBC.
Lastly (so far) for October, East Anglia Branch will be holding the ‘Placemaking and Context Design and Planning for Historic Areas’ CPD branch Partnership event on Thursday 29 October. It will also include the IHBC East Anglia Branch AGM.
The event to be held in Kings Lynn will have morning training sessions delivered by Dave Chetwyn and will consider placemaking, design and planning for historic places. The afternoon sessions will focus on the heritage-led aspects of the King’s Lynn Masterplan, delivered by Jemma Curtis and Connor Smalls, as well as the King’s Lynn Library project, delivered by Louise Boddie and Lewis Williams. The branch AGM will be held after lunch for IHBC Members and there will be an optional walking tour of the South Quay Riverfront and the King’s Lynn Library to close the day.
