IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘Our IHBC NewsBlog posts regularly review the diverse career opportunities in heritage, conservation and related areas, all as posted on our IHBC Jobs etc service.’

‘This round again demonstrates the huge variety of roles that employers are looking to the IHBC for help to fill, here highlighted by four representative sector organisations and roles:

  • Cadw: Collections and Castle Manager
  • Historic England: Senior Building Conservation Adviser
  • Historic Towns & Villages Forum: Executive Director (Consultancy)
  • West Midlands Heritage Trust: Trustees

All recognise the same service standards and values captured in our Charter-linked discussions, as we deliver public benefit by supporting competence and best practice in conservation, management and care across all aspects of the built and historic environment.  As such, this suite of post highlights how IHBC credentials and services can help your heritage-linked career, whatever your discipline or career level.’

‘A core focus for us is on interdisciplinary built and historic conservation, so this breadth of practice and sectors both represent and support our cross-discipline and cross-sector engagement.’

‘At the same time, our success in supporting members’ conservation practice and networks means that our Jobs etc service can reach far beyond our specialist core network. That is why our approach to conservation skills and competence plays such a critical role in employers’ evaluation of the abilities and the potential of candidates.’

‘As regular readers of these NewsBlogs know, career opportunities on the IHBC Jobs etc. service typically range widely across sectors, skills, employers, locations and roles.  However all reflect a common objective: to secure the right person for the post.  They also share a common strategy, as they target IHBC members, their skills and our wide-ranging networks.’

Employers and subscribers see specific strengths too:

  • targeted and responsive user service:
  • dedicated full webpage advert
  • customised emails to nearly 3K subscribers
  • IHBC Jobs etc homepage posting with logo
  • IHBC website homepage with prominent link to IHBC Jobs etc

  • Review of advertisements on IHBC’s NewsBlogs (subject to service capacity) and
  • an exclusive feedback service on circulation and social media posts performance.
  • Targeted reductions for charities, conservation focus, multiple posts and more

‘This service makes sure that our posts reach the right people, whatever their level, sector or practice area.  The jobs advertised confirm that too.’

‘This period again captures opportunities that represent the wide range of conservation-related skills needed across government, national and third sectors, as well as the career opportunities and interests for personal development.  They include distinct posts and skills from across charities to national heritage agencies: Historic Towns & Villages Forum’s call for an Executive Director (Consultancy), West Midlands Heritage Trust’s search for Trustees, Cadw’s Collections and Castle Manager and Historic England’s Senior Building Conservation Adviser as well as a Principal Inspector (Government Historic Estates Unit – GHEU).

Altogether these capture just how our Jobs etc service – and IHBC credentials – can benefit your career, whatever you specialism, as well as your business, whatever its size!’

‘One key group of employers for our members is, of course, those in local government, and their posts are also well represented this round.  Such roles typically reach across a range of areas that impact on conservation standards and public benefit.  This round we see Waverley seeking a Senior Conservation Officer; Bath & North-East Somerset a Conservation Officer, and Derby an Historic Buildings Officer (Enforcement).

Interestingly this round too we see also ‘Design’ as a focus, and also across career grades, as Swindon seeks a Graduate Design & Conservation Officer and the City of London a Planning Officer (Design).

The expanded awareness of Conservation’s fundamental link to holistic heritage care and management – from control and regeneration to design – represents an important awareness by employers of the broader environmental and cultural compliance the IHBC captures in our conservation practice standards, skills assessment and regulatory oversight.  Two bodies from charities this round capture that understanding are noted above: the Historic Towns & Villages Forum consultancy post and West Midlands Heritage Trust’s call for Trustees.

‘Widening this focus from conservation-led amenity-focussed employers to encompass heritage-linked employers, we have other sectors with comparable community priorities, notably Church bodies.  They, too, often see the value and benefits in accessing the IHBC’s skilled networks though in this round there is only the Diocese of Oxford, which seeks a Church Buildings Officer.

In the private sector, employer interest in competitive services that reach across the spectrum of roles encompassed by the IHBC’s accreditation – the IHBC’s Conservation Cycle, and our Areas of Competence – is also very evident, while also looking to the same wide spectrum of career levels.

In this round Simpson & Brown seeks a Heritage Consultant/Assistant (Maternity Cover); Walsingham Planning a Heritage Consultant and HCUK Group an Historic Building Surveyor.

‘To find out more on our accreditation standards and processes, our MATE and related sessions are designed help career-focussed, conservation-conscious practitioners secure IHBC accreditation, and at minimal cost.  These events guide members and networks on how to align their skills, knowledge and experience with the IHBC’s own interdisciplinary assessment of conservation competence, a system aligned with national and international conservation practice standards.’
