Government slashes energy firms’ ECO levy

The Green industry has reacted angrily as cuts slow the programme to retrofit poorer homes.

The government is set to slow the pace of the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) programme that provides retrofit measures to the homes of poorer households. Prime Minister David Cameron said last month that he would reduce the levy that energy companies are required to put on all domestic energy bills, which finances retrofit measures such as insulation. Following that announcement, the government has said it will consult on proposals to cut ECO in order to help reduce the average household energy bill by £30-35 next year. The ECO cuts have been announced alongside a raft of changes to the companion Green Deal for homeowners, intended to improve uptake of the initiative.
