This national Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme is providing opportunities to gain further skills, knowledge and experience to enable the cultural sector to deliver quality programmes for children and young people. A range of CPD one-day courses and other activities are on offer to museum and archive educators and other cultural sector and children and young people’s sector professionals, to strengthen the role of museums, galleries and archives in the delivery of the Children’s Agenda.
The CPD programme is part of the MLA programme funded by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Children, Schools & Families (DCSF) through Strategic Commissioning. It works alongside other Strategic Commissioning programmes, including Campaign! Make an Impact, Take One Picture, National Science Network, Learning Links and a national Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme. Over 2000 opportunities for professional development are on offer to staff working with children and young people across the 9 regions of England through seminars, workshops and mentoring/exchange activities focusing on the Common Core Skills Framework.
The MLA Core Skills Framework has been developed in consultation with the Children’s Workforce & Development Council, to support the development of key skills for sector staff working with children and young people.
The six core skills are:
1. Effective communication and engagement
2. Child and young person development
3. Multi-agency working
4. Supporting transition
5. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child
