Bradford Council has bought a derelict Odeon cinema for £1 and will be exploring ‘commercially viable’ ways of saving the building.
The council has been handed the building, which has been empty since 2000, by the Homes and Communities Agency. It has also received £3.5m funding to prepare the site for development.
Leader of Bradford Council, David Green, said: ‘Acquiring the former Odeon means that we can now examine commercially viable ideas to save the building which many have fought to keep over the last decade while it has stood empty. It has always been our policy to find a sustainable future for the Odeon.’
The council is inviting bids for the redevelopment of the site and will make a final decision on its future next Summer.
