A Defra funded report published today into the sustainability of plasterboard is the first step on a ‘roadmap’ which will ultimately provide best practice for the industry. The report:
* summarises evidence on the environmental, social and economic impacts at each stage of the product lifecycle – from raw materials, through manufacture, installation and end of life;
* highlights the wide range of Government and industry actions already being taken to minimise these impacts; and
* examines areas that have the potential for further action.
This report is the work of the Plasterboard Sustainability Partnership – a Government and industry group aimed at improving the environmental credentials of plasterboard and enhancing its contribution to sustainable construction. The next objective for the Plasterboard Sustainability Partnership is for Defra to work with industry stakeholders to identify areas that could benefit from further effort and to prioritise the development of a voluntary action plan for tackling some of the gaps identified.
