Scotland considers presumption in favour of sustainable development

A presumption in favour of sustainable development could be introduced in Scotland as a central plank in a key national planning policy, according to a consultation from the Scottish government.

The Scottish Government has issued a consultation paper setting out proposals for a revised section on ‘Sustainability and Planning’ in Scottish Planning Policy (SPP).

The administration is now considering replacing the Draft SPP principal policies on ‘sustainable economic growth’ and ‘sustainable development’ with a principal policy on ‘Sustainability and Planning’ and introducing a presumption in favour of sustainable development into the SPP.
