IHBC’s Context reports on Carlisle’s ‘School for Skills’ 2013

context 131

The new edition of Context, the journal of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), looks back on the skills-related themes and issues in the 2013 IHBC Annual School in Carlisle, and forward to how the wide range of skills discussed there can be developed in the future.

IHBC’s President Trefor Thorpe said: ‘If you want to know what nearly a hundred and fifty built heritage conservation professionals get up to holed up in a northern town for a couple of days the various vignettes of the Annual School in Carlisle last June from IHBC members in the latest edition of Context provide a fascinating insight into the enthusiasm, knowledge and pleasure derived from this stimulating annual event.’

‘New tricks, new experiences – you bet, and as for me, well, shaping my dibber in Carlisle’s main square on the final day will live in my memory for some time!’

This year’s Annual School, hosted by the IHBC’s North Branch and took place in Carlisle, and turned the spotlight on conservation skills of all types. The current issue of Context looks in detail at those discussions along with additional articles reflecting the Schools theme and content.  School delegates are also shown turning their hand to more practical conservation skills in the open-air skills fair on the final day, sponsored jointly between the IHBC and the National Heritage Training Group and delivered by the Heritage Skills Initiative (HSI) at the North of England Civic Trust.

As ever, themed issues of Context also include more general conservation articles as well as news, book reviews and reports from IHBC’s officers.

Forthcoming Context themes include the ‘Value of Heritage’ and ‘Wood’.
