The IHBC wants to support our local government conservation services by offering some useful suggestions for improvements to governments across the UK, to help both service users and local government conservation officers and advisers and we need your advice, input and suggestions!
IF YOU ARE A CONSERVATION SERVICE OFFICER, ADVISER OR PROVIDER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT, PLEASE HELP US:
- If you offer advice on conservation matters in local government please complete the form linked below.
- If you know of anyone who offers advice on conservation matters in local government please forward this message to them so they can complete the form.
NB: As we seek ideas first, rather than data, this can take from as little as 2 minutes
IHBC Director Seán O’Reilly said: ‘At the last IHBC Council we concentrated on moving forward the 3rd of our Parliamentary ‘5 Commitments to Help Heritage Skills in Conservation…’, and ‘Investigate the complex challenges in heritage management processes and skills’.
We focussed on the most stretched of these public service providers: those supporting conservation outcomes in local government across the UK, working at the coal-face to deliver community-based conservation and amenity benefits and outcomes.’
‘At the Council we had lots of useful input and thoughts from across our membership, and now, with the launch of this survey – perhaps the first to actually ‘just ask’ the officers what they need! – we look forward to hearing more.’
Survey input by informed, active and busy local government conservation officers and advisers will help us plan both our next steps in this programme while also informing our wider strategy.
With your help, we’ll be able to continue our push for targeted help and support that will benefit all our members, and most especially for now, those in local government and the services they work so hard to deliver.’

The IHBC wants to support our local government conservation services by offering some useful suggestions for improvements to governments across the UK to help both service users and local government conservation officers and advisers. So we need your advice, input and suggestions!
We plan to promote these services, and their potential, to the highest levels of UK governments.
We want to call for changes that can support you in making these services better for users, as well as for Officers and advisers.
The most helpful ideas for now will be practical, cost-conscious and manageable, but we are open to ALL suggestions.
We need your proposals and suggestions to help us help you, and help conservation.
Remember:
- The survey is open to all who offer advice on behalf of local government conservation services.
- The form is short and quick to fill, so please do send us your thoughts: that input is essential!
- The survey is confidential and may be completed anonymously.
- We will follow up on findings in the late Summer, before presenting to a Preliminary Briefing in Westminster in the Autumn.
- This is a short, scoping survey with an initial formal deadline of July 10, 2026.
- NB: As this initiative will continue, the survey will remain open to contributions after that date.
Your input and thoughts are very much appreciated.
