Georgian Group seeks a new Chair

The Georgian Group is seeking a new Chair to succeed Lady Nutting OBE, who retires next year after nearly fifteen years in post, with a deadline of 15 January 2014.

The Georgian Group writes:
The Georgian Group, set up in the 1930s to fight the demolition of some of our finest buildings and still at the forefront of heritage protection, is looking for a successor to Lady Nutting OBE, who retires next year after nearly fifteen years in post.

Under her leadership, the Group has remained a key line of defence against threats to the nation’s 200,000 Georgian buildings. As a statutory consultee in the planning system in England and Wales, it is asked every year to review around 6000 planning applications, ranging from minor alterations to demolitions, and its constructive input has helped save many buildings, including part of a listed terrace attacked by arsonists in the 2011 Tottenham riots.

A notable innovation over the past decade has been The Group’s annual Architectural Awards, giving public recognition to exemplary restoration schemes. It also devotes resources to education, in an effort to instil in young people an appreciation of the built environment. Its collaborative, holistic approach is exemplified in Sheerness-on-Sea in Kent on the Isle of Sheppey, where the Group has recently been part of a highly successful effort to preserve what survives of the 1820s Royal Dockyard, opposing unsympathetic development proposals, funding the reinstatement of historic fabric and finding suitable buyers for buildings at risk.

The appointment of the new Chairman is expected to take effect in June 2014.
