Six huge restoration projects will take place across Britain with a £47 million round of Heritage Lottery Fund awards for ‘existing and potential tourist attractions’.

Winchester Cathedral, in Hampshire, will spend £10.5 million on urgent conservation works and a series of exhibitions, including an exposition of its six Mortuary Chests carrying the bones of Anglo Saxon kings.
Knole, the Medieval Kent palace which was Henry VIII’s hunting lodge, will be refurbished to the tune of almost £8 million, creating specific space for the world’s largest collection of Royal Stuart furniture.
Windermere Steamboat Museum in Cumbria, Flax Mill Maltings in Shropshire, Chester Farm in Hampshire and Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery in Powys will also be transformed.

Knole, Kent – £7.75 million
The medieval palace, renaissance mansion and former hunting lodge to Henry VIII will become ‘a more integral part of everyday life in the area’, with a bespoke space – Knole Studios – built to conserving the unsurpassed resident collection of Royal Stuart furniture.
Windermere Steamboat Museum, Cumbria – £9.4 million
This showcase of two hundred continuous years of boatbuilding in the Lake District will be reopened to the public in a new museum on the edge of Lake Windermere, providing a range of accredited training and apprenticeship opportunities.
Winchester Cathedral, Hampshire – £10.5 million
One of Europe’s most magnificent medieval Cathedrals will undergo urgent conservation works and host displays telling the stories of the Cathedral’s importance in the development of the nation and kingship.
Flax Mill Maltings, Shropshire – £12.8 million
The complex of 18th and 19th-century industrial buildings in Shrewsbury, including the world’s first iron-framed building, will be restored for commercial, community and visitor purposes.
Chester Farm, Northamptonshire – £4 million
The at-risk set of listed buildings will be developed and opened up to the public, incorporating an Archaeological Resource Centre and a series of excavations.
Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery, Powys – £2.5 million
Considered one of the finest examples of early Victorian Greek Revival architecture in Wales, the gallery will be revitalised as a key heritage resource for the area.
