National Grid has announced the route details of its new 400 kilovolt (kV) power line connection for proposed new power generation in south west England including the planned new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset.
The transmission company plans to bury the line for an eight kilometre stretch through the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This would leave this area free from pylons for the first time in 40 years.
Overall the new connection will mean around 90 fewer pylons, National Grid said. It said it planned to use the new lower height T-pylon for the majority of the overhead route. At 35 metres tall, the T-pylon is a third shorter than the traditional lattice pylon. This could be the first time the competition-winning design is used.
