English planning applications down 30%

The number of planning applications received by district planning authorities in England was some 30 per cent lower in the March quarter of 2009 than a year ago, according to latest figures compiled under the auspices of the UK Statistics Authority. These statistics showed that district level planning authorities also saw a decrease of 29 per cent in the number of applications decided (granted or refused) when compared with the same quarter 12 months ago.

Other headline figures indicated that decisions on planning applications for residential developments (dwellings) decreased by 36 per cent in the March quarter of 2009 compared with the same quarter in 2008. Decisions on major residential developments (10 or more dwellings) fell by 46 per cent over the same period. The percentage of major applications determined within the 13-week target was 71 per cent compared with 72 per cent in the same quarter a year earlier. However, planning authorities that undertake county level planning activity determined 393 applications: an increase of 15 per cent when compared with the same quarter a year ago.
